Aerobic Septic Systems

What is an Aerobic Septic System?

An aerobic septic system, also known as an Aerobic Treatment System (ATS), is a sophisticated sewage treatment solution that uses an aerobic process to efficiently treat wastewater. This system is ideal for areas where public sewer systems are unavailable and offers the added benefit of producing a high-quality secondary water source that can be used for irrigation.

Advantages of Aerobic Septic Systems

Versatility and Efficiency:

  • Irrigation Potential: Aerobic systems produce nutrient-rich water that can be sterilized and used for surface irrigation, offering more flexibility and requiring less space than traditional leach fields.

  • Advanced Treatment: These systems use a multi-phase process to ensure thorough wastewater treatment and high-quality effluent.

The Aerobic Septic System Process

  1. Pre-Treatment:

    • Removes large solids and undesirable substances from the wastewater.

  2. Aeration:

    • Introduces oxygen to promote the growth of aerobic bacteria that digest biological waste.

  3. Settling:

    • Allows undigested solids to settle, forming sludge that must be periodically removed.

  4. Disinfection:

    • Chlorine or UV light disinfects the treated water, making it suitable for irrigation or other uses. This stage is optional but recommended where sterile effluent is needed.

Maintaining Your Aerobic System

To maintain the balance of the living ecosystem of microbes, avoid excessive use of bleach or antibiotics and refrain from disposing of non-digestible items in the system.

Types of Aerobic Treatment Systems

Fixed Film Systems:

  • Utilize a porous medium to support biomass film for waste digestion. Designs include stationary or moving media systems, like Rotating Biological Contactors (RBCs).

Continuous Flow, Suspended Growth Systems (CFSGAS):

  • Rely on bacteria suspended in wastewater, with air pumps providing aeration and stirring.

Retrofit or Portable Systems:

  • Enhance existing anaerobic systems by adding aerobic features to reduce biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and total suspended solids (TSS), reversing bio-mat development.

Composting Toilets

For areas requiring alternative solutions, composting toilets treat only toilet waste using aerobic bacteria, fungi, arthropods, and earthworms, converting most waste into water vapor and carbon dioxide.
